Owls, Hawks and Landscapes of Canada

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I know, it’s not wedding photography, but another love of mine! Recently did a photography tour to Canada for owl photography. Got some amazing shots! There are even a few nice landscape shots as well.

2010 is going to be a big year for travel and nature photography stay tuned for that.

We are also potentially putting together a tour of North Central Maine where the moose and bear roam. I’ve seen the bear tracks, and I’ve almost hit a moose. We would also finish up the trip to Acadia National Park on the Coast of Maine, and then possibly the Portland Head Lighthouse. The last leg of the trip offers beautiful landscape photos, but takes a few days to do it right.

Anyhow here are the owl pics:

This is a very large barred owl that has caught and killed a short eared owl. Something amazing to see in the wild! the next photo shows detail of the short eared owl.

Grand Tetons and Yellowstone: Part II

Friday, September 11th, 2009

My second full day in Wyoming turned out to be as successful as the first. I spent the majority of the day in Yellowstone. After seeing a bear and moose on day 1, i was determined to find and photograph a grizzly. I was told Yellowstone was the place to go.

No bears on this day, as I drove up and down every possible road in the park. Even though I didn’t see any grizzlies, I did encounter a nice big herd of wild bison off the side of the road, which included two males going at it pretty hard. It was something to see in nature in such a big open area no less.

Enjoy!

Grand Teton and Yellowstone Parks

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Every once in a while I take a vacation. A few weeks ago I decided to go one of the few places in the US that I have ever been; Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. I only had three full days to see both and I think I did a pretty good job getting my photos. I’ll post highlights from different days in random posts over the next week or so.

I went with few expectations, just getting really nice landscape shots, however after the first day I had high expectations. On the first day I photographed moose crossing Oxbend Bow with the mountains in the background and later on the same day I was withing ten feet of a black bear. This was exciting for me as it was my first bear encounter.

For the most part the bear was more interested in eating berries than eating anyone in the small group of onlookers. There was one sketchy moment when the bear decided to change direction towards me and it definitely concerned me, but things worked out.

I learned some of the best advice that day I possibly could for a bear encounter: Just don’t be the slowest person in the group and you’ll survive.

Enjoy part I:
